Because we all love a little surprise
I wonder how many of you spend hours in the weeks coming up to Mother's Day thinking what on Earth do I get my Mum or Mother figure? So I thought I would put together a little gift guide of things that I consider to be great gifts for a special lady. Gifts that I would like as a Mom and also gifts that I would buy for my Mum/Mum figures.
The edible collection
Afternoon Tea - the type you can order from a local, cake shop or cake maker. I mean, there can't be many mums who don't enjoy a cuppa and a bit of cake! Some local places near here I can think of are:- Graze with Roots, Bake 180, and Jeffreys.
Biscuits, cookies, sweeties, treats - again, not many mamas who would turn down a lovely, sweet treat! It's also something that can be picked at over a few days and doesn't need to be eaten all on the one day for freshness. You could try places such as Luxe biscuits by Shannon, Candy Love UK, Rosie's Sweet Treats and The Cheeky Cheesecake House.
I have also seen cute edible gifts online at various places. I can't add the photos but you can click each link below to view products on their websites!
The wearable Collection
It might seem like a copout to buy your mum 'slippers' or a 'new dressing gown' but honestly, speaking as a mum myself, give me ALL THE COMFIES! Honestly, they make a great gift because after a busy day of running around here, there and everywhere, I love nothing more than getting home and chucking on my comfy clothes and a cosy pair of slippers.
My pick of the best nightwear, loungewear, comfy clothes are:-
Wearable doesn't always have to mean clothing either. It could mean accessories. Things like scarves, gloves, handbags, purses, makeup bags and much more.
The artistic collection
Photo Session - Maybe your mum is the kind of mum who loves photos to adorn every wall in every room in her home or maybe she just likes the most special photos displayed. Either way, photos are ALWAYS a winner! You could book a photo session for you and her, to celebrate your bond. Or, if she is a more reserved kind of mum, you could have photos taken of you and your family, or her grandchildren, to gift to her. You can view the packages that I can offer by clicking this link or purchasing a gift card - PACKAGES click here or GIFT CARDS click here.
Books - Is your mum a lover of books? Is she the kind of mum who can bury herself into a novel and get lost until dinner time? If so, books would be a great option. Maybe you don't know what she likes to read though? Or she's a little particular? How about a bookstore gift card in that case? WHSmith, Waterstones or even somewhere like Amazon if she is happy to look online. I always buy things like that online, just because I tend to read reviews before buying.
Magazine Subscription - Is your mum a mag lover? Then how about treating her to a subscription to her favourite weekly read? It is something she treats herself to regularly anyway so how about paying for it for her so she can spend her pennies on something else she would like? Definitely a thoughtful gift in my opinion.
The sentimental collection
These are the gifts that get me. These are the gifts that sometimes don't cost a penny but you know that the person who gave it to you, thought long and hard about YOU. They are the gifts that mean the most. I thought about some that are nice gift ideas, like I say, some of which won't cost you anything, but your time.
A memory book - This could be a specific type such as the 'one line a day' books that encourages the recipient to write just one line a day of something about that day and serves as a collection of memories over 5 years to read back in years to come.
A photo album or book - This could just be a collection of old photographs of you together and special memories of your family. Or you could make it into a funny book with quotes or sentences about each photo and what she means to you. You can even make this kind of thing fairly low cost on apps such as 'photobooks.'
A poem or piece of writing - Something that you have taken the time to write from the heart. If you were feeling really fancy you could even print it off and frame it for her. Honestly, things like this are guaranteed to bring tears as they mean so much.
A trip out - Not just anywhere but somewhere that means something to you and your mum. Maybe it's your favourite restaurant or coffee shop that you have visited together before. Maybe it's a place where you told her something special like 'I'm getting married' or 'I'm pregnant' or just somewhere that you know is special to your mum in some way.
Something personalised - Maybe a cushion with a photo of her with her children/grandchildren. A mug with a photo on or just a nice mug just for mum. A calendar with nice quotes or photos that she can look at all year. There are SO many personalised gifts out there, just pop the phrase into a search engine and scroll away!
The experience collection
Now by 'experience' I don't mean a sky dive or drive in a rally car. I mean, it could, if that is something of interest to her, sure! But I mean an experience as in something that you could do together or even for her by herself or with another person of her choosing.
Spa day - I mean, who wouldn't love a relaxing spa break? You could arrange a surprise one for her or for both of you. Or you could tell her that that is what you'd like to arrange for her and choose somewhere together. You will know your mum best and whether she would prefer a surprise or to help plan.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner - Maybe this sounds like a boring option and so usual as an idea for a gift but some mums do just genuinely enjoy doing these things.
A show or a concert - It doesn't even have to be a massive showbiz event, it could just be a local band playing an evening somewhere or a local theatre group. Either way, it's just nice to spend time with your mum.
The handmade collection
If you are the crafty type, you could make something for your mum. If you're not so crafty, there are soooooo many small businesses around now that make handmade items that make ideal gifts! Things you could make could be:
- a photo gift of some sort, maybe in a frame or in an album
- some biscuits, cookies or a cake that you have made yourself. A great idea if you have little ones who could get involved too
- a hamper or basket containing some of her favourite things like choccies, a book, bath soak and face mask
- paint a plant pot for her garden and buy some seeds for it
- a keyring made from oven bake clay - again, another good one for little people to help with
Some local handmade items to buy that I have seen include:
- a personalised frame from Cute Little Customs
- wax melts from Wicks of Water Orton
- handmade jewellery from @OwlandIvyJewellery on Instagram
I hope you found this blog useful and maybe even inspiring as to what to get for someone special in your life. Maybe for another upcoming celebration even. Just remember, those who love us dearly never expect gifts. They would never want to see you struggle either to gift something if you were short on time or finding finances strained. A quick visit, phone call, cuppa, chat, FaceTime, hug is all a mum ever REALLY needs.
